Oliver Knussen was born in Glasgow. Now in his early forties, he is an acclaimed conductor, and his own music occupies a respected and regular place in concert and opera programs worldwide.
Since 1981 Oliver Knussen has been responsible for over 200 world and local premieres, and has made many award-winning recordings, most frequently with the London Sinfonietta. His conducting work is characterized by repeated invitations and sustained relationships - with, for example, the Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group and Residentie Orchestra, The Hague, as well as with the ASKO and the Schoenberg Ensembles, the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
As Co-Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival and as former head of Contemporary Music Activities at Tanglewood, Oliver Knussen has influenced contemporary music in many parts of the world. In 1994 his Horn Concerto for Barry Tuckwell, commissioned by the Suntory Foundation, was a huge success at its premiere with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. In 1994 Oliver Knussen was invited to become an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was made a Commander of the British Empire in the June Birthday Honours.
In 1995 Oliver Knussen entered into an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon: an ambitious program of recordings incorporates a broad range of 20th-century repertoire, including his own compositions.
